Good genes don’t run in my family, unfortunately. My father dealt with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease for as long as I can remember. He had a quadruple bi-pass in his mid-50s and died at the young age of 69. My mother suffered from a variety of ailments and passed away when she was 77. Every time I visit a new physician and complete the medical history page, I’m filled with despair as I tick off almost every disease and condition listed.
The good news is my lifestyle and diet are very different than what I grew up with. I eat clean foods, lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and some lean meats. I exercise regularly and deal proactively with stress through meditation and journaling. Hopefully, I will be able to stave off the array of medical issues that my siblings are dealing with.
I’m also very blessed to have a 93-year-old stepfather, Manny, who has become my guide to good health. He takes 1 medication for slightly elevated blood pressure and a range of different vitamins and supplements. He regularly quizzes me on what dosage of Vitamin D, E, or C I’m taking and suggests how to regulate my cholesterol levels with Lecithin. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable, but he’s taught me things I didn’t know.
The medical industry is quick to prescribe a pill to help us deal with common illnesses such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes. We don’t realize that while these medications may be helping with the issue, they could be affecting our health in other ways. Many people also have adverse reactions to these medications, leading them to take themselves off the prescription without any change in lifestyle or other remedies. While it does take discipline and attention to regulate our system more naturally, the outcomes can extend our lifespan for many years. Here are some of the words of wisdom from Manny that I hope you will consider incorporating into your daily routine to help you live a long and healthy life.
Wisdom from Manny:
Take supplements daily – Vitamin B12, C, A, E, D, and Lecithin are a must.
Go for a daily walk – at least 30 minutes a day.
Read a good book to escape the bad news that we’re surrounded by.
Appreciate every day because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring.
Laugh – at any opportunity that comes your way!
